A great alternative to filing for bankruptcy is to opt for a consumer proposal. You are eligible to file for a consumer proposal if you're able to pay back a portion of your debt. Another requirement is that your debt should be at least $1,000 but less than $250,000 (excluding debts secured by your principal residence). A great benefit of this choice is that it stops wage garnishments and harassing phone calls from creditors. You're usually able to retain your assets and it also freezes interest charges.
If you currently can't pay back a part of your debt, filing for bankruptcy can help you by eliminating most of it. This option provides you with a clean slate in terms of your finances. Although this option is often the 'last resort' it protects you from your creditors and halts legal action against you.
Proposal to Creditors (Division I)
If your debt is more than $250,000 and you can pay back a part of it, a Division I Proposal could help you. We work with you to design an offer to your creditors to pay back a certain percentage of what you owe them. If accepted by the creditors, a Division I Proposal has many benefits, including the cessation of the interest charged.
